Organizational History

For more than 45 years, our organization has been assisting the residents (human and animal) of Prince George’s County. While our programs have evolved over the years, our primary objective—to improve the lives of animals in our community—has remained the same. From our low-cost medical services, to cruelty investigation, to our adoption program, our commitment has withstood the test of time.

July 9, 1975

We were first incorporated as the Bowie-Collington Area SPCA, Inc.

November 7, 1983

As our work began to range outside the immediate Bowie area and into other parts of the County, we amended our name to SPCA of Prince George’s County, Inc.

November 3, 1985

The members of the Prince George’s County Humane Society and the SPCA of Prince George’s County, Inc. met to agree on the merge. They met at the Protocol House, 2406 Kalorama Road, NW. Washington, DC.

November 22, 1985

The two organizations officially merge. We officially became the SPCA/Humane Society of Prince George’s County. To our volunteers and clients, we will always be known as “the PGSPCA”.
