The SPCA/Humane Society of Prince George's County, Inc. is a nonprofit organization of volunteers dedicated to animal welfare. We are chartered by the State of Maryland, but we receive no state or county funds. Our activities are supported solely by contributions, dues and fundraising events.
• To reduce the number of unwanted litters of dogs and cats through our progressive spay/neuter program;
• To prevent cruelty to animals and all animal suffering through humane education, neglect and cruelty investigations, protective legal action, and an active dog and cat adoption program;
• To protect all animals against suffering and abuse through education on legislation effecting the protection of all animals.
The SPCA/HS provides a 24-hour voice-mail answering service and receives about 1,000 calls each month. 40% of these calls are spay and neuter assistance requests, 10% are for cruelty investigations, 25% for miscellaneous information, and 25% are adoption requests. Emergency calls that deal with a suffering animal are referred to our live answering service which refers the matter to the on-call volunteer for immediate attention.
We view this large number of calls as a significant indication that our services are needed by the citizens of Prince George's County and surrounding areas.
Unfortunately, we've temporarily suspended one of our major activities, our low-cost spay/neuter clinic. We've altered over 20,000 animals there in the last five years, and we are proud of the work we've done. We hope to continue offering this valuable service to the community, and we're working hard to reopen the clinic. Your donations will help!
